Gothic Art বা গথদের সঙ্গে কেমন এক ভয়াল বিভৎসতা যেন মিশে রয়েছে। যেন কালো অন্ধকার ছিল গথীয় জগৎ। কেন এমন মনে করা হয়? কে বলতে পারে? কেবল কি গথরাই হিঃস্র আর বিভসৎ ছিল? অন্যান্য জার্মিনিক ট্রাইবগুলো তা হলে কি? তারা হত্যাযজ্ঞ চালায়নি? ভ্যান্ডালরা? যা হোক। গথরা সেই কবে ইউরোপের মূলধারার সঙ্গে মিলেমিশে একাকার হয়ে রয়েছে। অথচ, আজও তারা হানা দেয় ইউরোপীয় তরুনদের আধুনিক জীবনে-ডিসটরটেড ইলেকট্রিক গিটারে। মেটাল গানে।

আগের একটি লেখায় আমি বলেছি যে ইউরোপীয় ইতিহাসে জার্মানিক ট্রাইবগুলির ভূমিকা অত্যন্ত গভীর। অভিন্ন ভাষা ও সংস্কৃতির অধীন পশ্চিম ও মধ্য ইউরোপের গোষ্ঠীগুলিই ছিল জার্মানিক জাতি । খ্রিস্টপূর্ব ২য় শতক থেকে খিস্টীয় পঞ্চম শতক অবধি এরা ইউরোপের ইতিহাসের রঙ্গমঞ্চে ছিল সক্রিয়।

যাহোক। ইউরোপের মধ্যযুগীয় শিল্পের এক বিশেষ ধারাই হল গথিক আর্ট।
স্থাপত্যেই প্রথম গথিক রীতি প্রতিফলিত হতে দেখি। একে একে তারপর ভাস্কর্য,
ধর্মীয় কিংবা সেকুলার ভবন এবং দ্যুতিময় সব পান্ডুলিপিতে স্পষ্ট হয়ে ওঠে গথিক বৈশিষ্ট্য। আসলে মধ্যযুগের স্থাপত্য মানেই গথিক আর্ট। ইউরোপের মধ্যযুগের সময়কাল ৫ম থেকে পঞ্চদশ শতক। ফ্রান্সে ১১৪০ খ্রিস্টাব্দে গথিক শিল্পের স্ফুরণ ঘটেছিল। রেঁনেসার প্রসার গথিক আর্টের সমাপ্তি ঘোষনা করেছিল।

সভ্যতায় কোনও ধারাই আসলে বিলীন হয়ে যায় না। কাজেই, গথিক আর্ট কুড়ি শতকে সঙ্গীতের ক্ষেত্রে প্রভাব রাখল। এক্ষেত্রে রক সঙ্গীতে। আমরা জানি, রক থেকে হার্ড রক। হার্ড রক থেকে মেটাল; মেটাল থেকে হেভি মেটাল।

সর্বকালের শ্রেষ্ট হেভি মেটাল ব্যান্ড হল ব্ল্যাক Black Sabbath। ওরাই প্রথম ওদের গানে গথিক ডার্ক ব্যাপারটা নিয়ে আসে। এই ব্রিটিশ ব্যান্ডটির উত্থান হয়েছিল ইংল্যান্ডের বার্মিংহামে। লিড ভোকাল ওজি ওসর্বোন।
ব্ল্যাক সাবাথের প্রথম অ্যালবামের নাম ছিল ব্ল্যাক সাবাথ। কভারে ছিল গথিক আর্ট। ১৯৭০ সালে ওরা ওদের ডেব্যু অ্যালবাম বার করে। যেটি গথ মেটালের প্রথম অ্যালবাম বলে চিহ্নিত।
